KwaZulu-Natal National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) head Elaine Harrison has told the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry that she believes the provincial political killings task team (PKTT) has made notable progress in finalising cases.

Harrison agreed with the views of KZN Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi and National Commissioner Fannie Masemola that the unit made significant progress.

Harrison assigned a team of NPA prosecutors to support the unit and ensure its cases were effectively prosecuted.

Since its establishment, the task team has handled 612 dockets, of which 297 have been finalised.

Testifying in Pretoria on Friday, Harrison maintained that there was meaningful progress in the unit’s investigations.

“If you look at our database with regard to the finalised cases, all the matters that have been recorded in 2025 are successful prosecutions. We also look at how we performed in the previous year with regards to those cases, and we rate ourselves regarding the finalisation of cases.”

She said there’s evidence suggesting the task team was headed in the right direction.

“If you look at prior to the dedicated capacity and after the dedicated capacity was provided, you will find that there was a higher finalisation and success rate of these cases.”
