DURBAN - Democratic Alliance (DA) mayoral candidate for the eThekwini metro, Hannif Hoosen, has vowed to prioritise service delivery in the city should he be elected mayor.

Hoosen, a former member of parliament, was announced as the candidate for the metro in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) on Friday.

The DA says the municipality, which is the province’s economic hub, is a key feature of its election plan for the upcoming local government elections.

Shortly after being announced as the preferred candidate for the KZN metro’s top post, Hoosen took to the podium, making a number of promises, many of which were centred around issues of service delivery.

“When I’m elected your mayor, it will not matter where you live, it will not matter what you look like, and it will not matter how you speak – we will fight for the residents of the city to ensure that they have decent facilities, decent services, street lights that work, and no potholes in the city of Durban.” Hoosen said.

He told hundreds of party supporters gathered in Chatsworth that he will revive tourism in the city.

“Hotels along our beaches were packed, and tourists took to our streets. Today people are swimming in sewage, and the tourists have disappeared – we can change that.” He added.

Meanwhile, the party says it's confident in its candidate, citing his history of public service as the main reason.
