CAPE TOWN - The National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) has raised concerns over planned camel races in Heidelberg, Gauteng.
Saturday marks day two of Laerskool AG Visser’s Kameelfees, and the event was promoted as featuring five camel races.
Following promotion of the event, the NSPCA followed up with the Department of Agriculture, which confirmed that the licence issued only covers riding, exhibition and training.
It was found that the legal requirements for using a temporary facility were not met.
The Department has since advised the camel owner and operator that the event should not proceed due to non-compliance.
Samanta Stelli from the NSPCA says schools should model compassion and respect for life rather than create a spectacle.
“We have since written to the school to highlight this communication and to make it clear that, based on the Department’s findings, the camel races or any activities involving these camels should not take place. The Department’s guidance also sets strict conditions for any camel-related activities.” Stelli said.
