Two suspects due to appear in Athlone Magistrate's Court for firearm-related charges

Two suspects are expected to appear at the Athlone Magistrate's Court on Monday facing charges related to the possession of firearms and ammunition.   

This follows crime prevention efforts in Gugulethu and Heideveld over the weekend.   

The first arrest took place in the Europe informal settlement, where members of the Gugulethu crime prevention unit arrested a 25-year-old man found with an unregistered 9mm pistol and ammunition.

Police spokesperson Wesley Twigg said a second gun was also confiscated.   

"In an unrelated intervention, members of the anti-gang unit arrested an adult male for the possession of an unlicensed firearm in Rosa Court, Heideveld. The members conducted an intelligence-driven operation at the identified premises and seized the firearm."
