As South Africa marks Transport Month in October, the Gauteng Transport Authority has cast its focus on the need for investment in road infrastructure.
Interim chief Tshepo Kgobe has told the mobility summit in Sandton on Wednesday that Gauteng needs about R120 billion to build new roads to cater for the growing population in the province
Kgobe highlighted the need for new infrastructure to accommodate millions of vehicles that use the provincial roads.
Kgobe stressed that government needs to find new means to ensure that the growth of mobility is unhindered.
He was speaking at the two-day mobility summit.
He noted that the province is currently struggling with congestion on its highways, which is now affecting residential areas too.
"Now, you have already seen it. Now, traffic does not start on the freeway. It now starts in front of your estate gate and that in itself is the reality you are facing as Halden, where congestion will now move back into the suburbs, and as it moves back into the suburbs, it will create much more of a bigger challenge. At the current moment, you're spending three hours trying to get out of where you are in the morning. Now, that in itself is a big change."
He added that there is a great need for investment to be made into the road infrastructure.
