Motau led the evidence of National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola over two days last week.

It remains unclear why he stepped down, with the commission claiming he left on good terms.

While Motau has yet to make any public statements about why he stepped down as chief evidence leader for the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, it’s understood that he was not completely happy with the way the commission was going about its work.

Commission spokesperson, Jeremy Michaels, confirmed that Chaskalson would take up the reins of evidence leader.

"The commission confirms that Advocate Terry Motau SC has stepped down from his role as chief evidence leader and has left the commission on good terms. The commission is grateful for the service Adv Motau SC rendered."

Chaskalson was one of the evidence leaders in the State Capture Commission.

His focus was on the illegal money flows, and his workstream recovered R875 million from global consulting firm McKinsey & Co.
