PRETORIA - The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry will not respond to queries on whether they had reached out to French ambassador, Nathi Mthethwa, to appear as a witness before the commission.

Mthethwa’s body was found at a hotel in Paris on Tuesday, as investigations surrounding the circumstances of his death are ongoing.

In his testimony two weeks ago, KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi accused Mthethwa of politically interfering in policing matters in 2011, when he was police minister.

Mkhwanazi claimed Mthethwa blocked a move to criminally charge former Crime Intelligence boss, Richard Mdluli, who stands accused of abusing his powers and misusing the secret service account, otherwise known as the slush fund.

Madlanga Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels would not be drawn to comment on the matter.

"We are not going to be commenting at all about Ambassador Mthethwa’s passing, except to say we pass our sincere condolences to his family."
