Some analysts are of the view that the Gaza peace plan presented by United States (US) President Donald Trump lacks fundamental details and leaves the global community with more questions than answers.

This week, Trump announced a 20-point plan that would ensure peace in Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accepted the plan, and Hamas is yet to respond.

International relations analyst Professor Yossi Mekelberg said the plan will, however, require commitment from international governments.

"What can be achieved in the meantime is ending the war, reducing the tension, and try to build on the post-war reconstruction of Gaza. Then, of course, only if the international community will stay absolutely committed to a peace process."

Mekelberg added that the opportunity for change, ultimately, lies in the hands of both Israeli and Palestinian citizens.

"When the war ends, Hamas would become less relevant in Palestinian politics. We see it also from the opinion polls in Palestine, how there is a declining support in Hamas. Israel, at one point between now and October of next year, will hold elections."
