The Department of Water and Sanitation said it's pleased with the state of dam water levels in the Western Cape.

It said that since the winter season, the province's dams had steadily increased by about 3% each week.

Overall, provincial dam levels are currently at 84.1%, which is a slight decrease from 84.6%.

Dams yielding the most water are Voëlvlei at 102.1%, Steenbras Upper at 101.4%, and Berg River with 99.8%.

The department’s deputy communications director, Malusi Rayi, said they continue to urge farmers, residents and industries to use water sparingly.

"Most of the dams in the Western Cape water supply system have also been above 90%. We will continue to monitor the dams closely and take necessary measures to safeguard the province's water resources."

Rayi added that the department will continue to monitor the province's water resources.

"As the Department of Water and Sanitation, we are fairly satisfied about the state of provincial dams that have been stabilising above 80% for the past two months."

He said saving water was a collective effort to ensure there is enough water for the country.

"Since the start of winter this year, the dams have been impounding water by about 3% per week, but some of the dams have been declining by less than 1% at the beginning of the spring season."
