City Power, Johannesburg's electricity provider, is facing a serious financial crisis, with the City of Johannesburg reportedly owing R2 billion in unpaid bills.
Tyrell Meyers, a Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor and the party's Johannesburg spokesperson on the mayoral committee for environment and infrastructure services, stated that this funding shortfall was not only delaying critical maintenance and the procurement of equipment but has also resulted in unpaid contractors.
This situation is leading to further delays in power restorations throughout the city.
"The city's finances are being mismanaged; they're not collecting enough money first and foremost. They're not paying them over timeously to the municipal entity."
He cited escalating costs, poor revenue collection, and an overreliance on emergency contractors as contributing factors to the crisis.
Meyers warned that payment delays were leaving entire communities vulnerable to prolonged blackouts.
Tyrell Meyers was in conversation with Jacob Moshokoa on CapeTalk's Early Breakfast show.
