The City of Ekurhuleni has vowed to continue evicting businesses operating illegally at Plastic City in Brakpan, including those who have erected homes in the area.
The city says the operation is an effort to restore stability to the crime-ridden area.
Rival groups of illegal miners operating in the vicinity have recently been involved in a shootout.
Some residents have complained that they are being removed because of zama zamas.

"About a month ago, there was a big fight between the Zama Zamas, because this place is infested with Zama Zamas and also a lot of people are recycling using the Veldtefreden, a dumping site which belongs to the city," said City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini.
Dlamini adds that this is a joint restoration operation, with local businesses.
"The Metropolis, the SAPS, and other stakeholders, businesses that are around this area, who, after a long time of instability, violence in the area, have decided to do something about the situation we face today."
