COSATU has taken the City of Cape Town to task for its increased municipal tariffs.

The trade union handed the city a memorandum on Tuesday, challenging its fixed charges for water and sanitation and its cleaning levy, which were implemented in July this year.

About five hundred COSATU supporters marched through the Cape Town CBD to mark International Day for Decent Work.

City spokesperson Jean-Marie Pressly said that the city was reviewing COSATU's memorandum.

"We received the memorandum and will be responding in due course."

Western Cape provincial secretary, Melvern de Bruyn, said that COSATU also handed a memorandum to provincial and national government for the high unemployment rate in the country.

"The memorandum will talk to the question of job creation. We want decent jobs in our province, we want decent and real jobs for our people."

The Palestine Solidarity Campaign also joined the march, saying that Palestinians in war-ravaged Gaza have a similar plight to jobless South Africans.
