KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi told Parliament’s ad hoc committee that Crime Intelligence boss Dumisani Khumalo’s arrest was a "project" to disrupt reforms in Crime Intelligence.
Mkhwanazi said the project included the disbanding of the political killings task team and was also aimed at stopping criminal investigations in Gauteng.

Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi told the Madlanga Commission two weeks ago that Khumalo’s arrest was a planned move to curtail investigations into powerful crime syndicates.
He repeated the claims in Parliament on Tuesday, adding that key reforms in Crime Intelligence were also part of the plan to disrupt investigations.
Khumalo was arrested by the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), in what Mkhwanazi described as a politically motivated move.
"Khumalo’s arrest is a project. It’s a project to counter the criminal investigation in Gauteng. This letter of the minister, the closure of the task team, it’s a project."
Mkhwanazi also stated that the political killings task team was a mistaken target because those implicated were under the wrong impression that it was also investigating crime in Gauteng.
