Candidates hoping to be appointed to the country’s superior courts will continue to field tough questions from the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) on Wednesday morning, as interviews enter their second day.

The commission has interviews scheduled for the next two weeks for the Constitutional Court, the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA), the labour court and high courts.

On Tuesday, five candidates appeared before commissioners with the hope of being appointed to the apex court.

Commissioners on Tuesday saw candidates including supreme court judge, Nambitha Dambuza-Mayosi, who has a legal career spanning over 23 years, which includes 12 months acting at the Constitutional Court, and Advocate Alan Dodson, a senior counsel who has also had an acting stint at the apex court.

However, the interview of one of the candidates, Dr Madumetja Malepe, a retired academic, was marred by controversy, as allegations surfaced regarding the theft of church funds and the fact that she was currently under debt review.

"You are either going to be lifted from that review or you are going to be declared insolvent. If you are insolvent, you will not qualify to hold the position of a judge."

Malepe responded: "Yes, that has not yet arrived. I'm not insolvent."

On Wednesday morning, another supreme court judge, Ashton Skippers, who handed down judgment on the old apartheid flag constituting hate speech, will take the hotseat with the hope of appointment to the highest court in the land.
