President Cyril Ramaphosa has granted the late Ambassador to France, Nathi Mthethwa, a Special Official Funeral Category 2.

In response, the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) government has established a task team to assist with the final send-off arrangements.

Mthethwa died in France last week, and his body is expected to arrive on home soil on Thursday.

He will be laid to rest this Sunday in his home village, Kwa-Mbonambi, in the northern part of the province.

The Provincial Executive Council cut its cabinet meeting short on Wednesday to visit the Mthethwa homestead in Kwa-Mbonambi.

Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli stated that Mthethwa is deserving of the gesture for his long life of service.

“Except that he was an activist in his political party, the ANC, but he served government for a very long time in different portfolios as we know that in police he was there, in sports he was there, and in various portfolios. He served our country diligently with humility,” Ntuli said.

The Premier added that a team, which includes national, provincial, and local government officials, is currently busy with the funeral arrangements.
