The N1 Huguenot Tunnel was reopened on Thursday morning.

A bus fire inside the tunnel last week prompted the immediate closure of the busy route.

Emergency repair work and extensive safety assessments have since been conducted.

SANRAL said the decision to reopen was taken only after comprehensive verification by engineers and independent specialists.

While the tunnel is now operational, further permanent repair work will continue in the coming months.

The Western Cape Mobility Department's Antoinette Fennie: "We're pleased to announce that following emergency repairs and safety inspections, the Huguenot Tunnel and toll plaza were opened this morning at 6am."

Fennie is urging motorists to take note of the temporary safety measures put in place.

"The speed limit is 60km/h through most of the tunnel is reduced to 40km/h. These measures are in place until permanent repairs are completed during off-peak hours."
