Government has expressed support for the recent wave of police raids targeting individuals accused of corruption, saying they form part of the mandate of law enforcement agencies.
On Thursday, police raided the home of suspended deputy national police commissioner for crime detection, Shadrack Sibiya, in connection with allegations of defeating the ends of justice.
At the same time, the Special Investigating Unit swooped on the lavish Sandton mansion of businessman, Hangwani Maumela, where they siezed three Lamborghini vehicles.
Maumela has been linked to tender corruption at the Tembisa Hospital, which was first uncovered by slain whistleblower, Babita Deokaran.
Government spokesperson William Baloyi said that law enforcement authorities must be given space to perform their duties.
"These operations fall within the normal scope of their mandate to investigate matters and recover assets. The public is reminded that such activities are a standard and essential part of government's fight against corruption, ensuring accountability and upholding the rule of law. Law enforcement agencies should be afforded the space to conduct their work without disruption or interference. Government is confident that law enforcement agencies will at all material times act in full compliance with the law."
