The first accused in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, Muzi Sibiya, spent a second day on the witness stand as the defence's first witness, but requested an early break after being pressed for a detailed account of his arrest.

Sibiya, who prosecutors allege was the lookout man on the day the Bafana Bafana captain was killed at the home of his then-girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo, in October 2014, was asked to give a detailed account of his 2020 arrest and alleged assault by police on multiple occasions.

His lawyer, Advocate Charles Mnisi, pushed him to be specific in his answers, asking for the names of the police officers present, the exact times certain events happened, and what the officers were wearing.

However, during his testimony, Sibiya claimed to be making mistakes, which his lawyer cautioned him against.

Mnisi asked the court for an early adjournment, stating the toll the cross-examination was taking on his client:

Mnisi: “If you are tired, you are going to hamper your case; you must mention to the court that your energy levels are down. Otherwise, if you are going to proceed under those circumstances, you are going to end up answering things that you yourself you don’t understand, things I didn’t ask you, like what is happening right now. Would you like to ask the court for an adjournment?”

Sibiya responded by confirming his fatigue and requesting an early break:

“I am tired. I would like to request an adjournment until tomorrow [Wednesday].”

Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng agreed to the early adjournment, and the matter is set to resume on Wednesday with Sibiya back on the witness stand.
