Deputy Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya said Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu did nothing out of the ordinary when he issued a directive to disband the political killings task team (PKTT).

Sibiya defended Mchunu, saying the disbanding of the task team was a "lawful instruction" and a political decision, and there was nothing unusual about the directive.

He said it’s the minister’s space to decide on how he reduces crime and added that ministers should be “hands on,” even on operational matters.

On Tuesday night, Sibiya concluded his two-day testimony before the police ad hoc committee investigating police corruption.

“As far as I’m concerned, it’s a lawful instruction because the minister, who is the boss of the national commissioner, if you come up with something like that and say I don’t think this is needed today, let’s change direction. It’s happened before many times, even during Minister Bheki Cele’s time. So, it happens.”
