The African National Congress (ANC)-led multiparty coalition government in Gauteng says it has proved naysayers wrong, who believed it wouldn’t last long.
It's been more than a year since the government of provincial unity was formed, featuring four different political parties.
The PGU is a minority government, constituting less than 50 percent of total seats in the Gauteng legislature.
Speaking during a media briefing in Johannesburg on Wednesday, ANC Gauteng member, and also the education MEC, Matome Chiloane, noted the coalition had worked much better than anticipated.
"There is no problem; even in the legislature, there is nothing to worry about. We passed a budget seamlessly. There are those naysayers who said we won't be able to pass a budget. We passed a budget faster than provinces that are led by one party. We are very quick, we don’t have those challenges [of instability] at all. We co-govern with those that are in cabinet and with those outside cabinet, we give them an opportunity to contribute."
