CPUT management says no approved plans to adjust student fees

Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) management said there were no approved plans to make any adjustments to student fees at the institution.

This follows threats from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Student Command to protest at CPUT after raising concerns about the institution's proposed fees for 2026.

A group of EFF Student Command supporters halted shuttle services at CPUT's Cape Town campus for two hours on Wednesday before moving to CPUT's Bellville campus, where a memorandum was handed over.

CPUT management said it had informed students that decisions related to tuition fees must be agreed to by various stakeholders before the university council eventually makes the final sign-off.

This week, the institution proposed measures to curb institutional debt.

The plan includes an application fee, increased tuition and residence fees, and an upfront tuition fee payment of R3,500.

"Management meets with duly elected student leadership regularly. These matters are discussed at length during these consultative processes,” said CPUT spokesperson Lauren Kansley.

Kansley said a task team would discuss the proposal with students until an agreement was reached.
