President Cyril Ramaphosa has suspended the country's inspector-general of intelligence, Imtiaz Fazel, pending a parliamentary investigation into his conduct.

Ramaphosa announced his decision on Wednesday night after Parliament's joint standing committee on intelligence informed him about a complaint it received on Fazel.

News24 recently reported that Fazel recommended criminal charges against National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola and suspended Crime Intelligence boss, Dumsani Khumalo, over alleged R120 million CI property purchases.

Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said the committee should be allowed to do its investigation without any interference.

"The committee will conduct an investigation in line with section 7 sub-section 4 and section 7 sub-section 5 of the Intelligence Services Act, Act 40 of 1994."
