The Democratic Alliance (DA) has laid seven charges against the former Gauteng Department of Health's chief financial officer, Lerato Madyo, at the Johannesburg Central Police Station.

The party said the former CFO failed to act on information supplied by the late Babita Deokaran about alleged fraudulent transactions at Tembisa Hospital.

The list of charges includes failing to report corruption, theft and fraud, conspiracy to commit an offense, and failing to stop irregular expenditures.

Last month, the special investigating unit revealed the hospital irregularly awarded tenders to the tune of R2 billion.

"The important section here is that they got a criminal sanction, section 81, it covers financial misconduct wilfully or failing to exercise the duties of an accounting officer, so it's very serious charges. We focused on them because we think it’s very relevant to the role of a chief financial officer and what Ms Madyo failed to do, " said the DA's Jack Bloom.
