Teen sentenced to 25 years in prison for murder of Deveney Nel

A teenager has been handed a 25-year prison sentence for the murder of a 16-year-old girl at Overberg High School in Caledon.
The 18-year-old was 17 when he stabbed to death his fellow learner, Deveney Nel, and hid her body in a storeroom at the school in August last year.

A 12-year sentence for defeating the ends of justice will run concurrently after he entered into a plea and sentencing agreement with the state.
"The NPA [National Prosecuting Authority] welcomes the 25 years direct imprisonment that has been handed down to the child in conflict with the law who has been convicted for the murder of Deveney Nel and an attempt to defeat the ends of justice," said NPA spokesperson, Eric Ntabazalila.
