Police have arrested a man for the illegal possession of drugs after he was found with over 800 mandrax tablets in Valhalla Park, Cape Town.

Officers deployed to stabilise a recent spike in gang-related crime acted on intelligence that led them to a property in Hector Street.

Police spokesperson FC van Wyk said the suspect was arrested on charges of possession and dealing in drugs.

"Upon their arrival at the premises, a 22-year-old male was searched and 834 mandrax tablets with an estimated street value of R41,700 and an undisclosed amount of cash believed to be the proceeds of crime was found on his person."

Once charged, the suspect will appear in the Bishop Lavis Magistrate's Court.
