Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa is expected to brief the media on South Africa’s updated Integrated Resource Plan in Pretoria on Sunday.
The plan outlines how the country will generate electricity, ensure sufficient supply to meet demand, and transition between various energy sources over time.
At a post-Cabinet briefing this week, Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni confirmed that Cabinet had approved the new roadmap.
The revised plan replaces the 2019 Integrated Resource Plan and is expected to address current electricity needs, the cost of generation technologies, grid constraints, and Eskom’s operational challenges.
It will also detail how the government intends to keep electricity affordable, ensure reliability of supply, and preserve jobs in the energy sector.
According to Cabinet, the plan is expected to unlock more than R2.2 trillion in investment.
It will also define South Africa’s primary energy sources and their implications for the future of the energy sector.
