WhatsApp, the globally popular messaging app with over two billion active users, is preparing for a major privacy-focused update.
Beginning early 2026, WhatsApp will introduce a new feature that lets users communicate using unique usernames instead of relying solely on phone numbers. This update, currently in beta testing for both Android and iOS, aims to boost user privacy without disrupting the app’s familiar functionality.
Traditionally, WhatsApp has identified users through their mobile phone numbers, a method that simplifies contact syncing and helps users connect easily with people in their address books. While this process will still be part of the initial account setup, there’s a key change ahead.
Users will continue verifying their phone numbers during registration to confirm their identity. But after that, they’ll be prompted to create a unique username, similar to platforms like Instagram or X (formerly Twitter). Once set, this username will serve as the primary way others find and interact with them on the app, replacing visible phone numbers as the default identifier.
