The Patriotic Alliance (PA) has become the first political party to publicly declare its support for Police Minister Senzo Mchunu’s directive to disband the political killings task team (PKTT).

PA representative Ashley Sauls argued that the task team’s financial expenses had become problematic and unjustifiable, particularly as the unit still had over sixty unresolved cases.

Sauls was questioning Mchunu, who was giving evidence before the ad hoc committee investigating corruption, before he concluded his testimony on Wednesday.

Despite his support for the disbandment, Sauls expressed scepticism regarding Mchunu's explanations about his connections to "questionable individuals", such as murder-accused Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala.

"Your testimony there is very questionable. I'm not convinced by it. But when it comes to the reasons and evidence before me for disbandment and immediate versus winding down, I saw with facts that I've just put to you why it would be justified."
