Former Police Minister Bheki Cele’s first day of evidence has seen him implicate Minister Senzo Mchunu in a conspiracy to have him arrested for corruption.

He’s also implicated Mchunu and Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala in a conspiracy to have crime intelligence head Dumisani Khumalo arrested.

Cele has also disagreed with Mchunu’s decision to disband the political killings task team, saying Mchunu should have informed the inter-ministerial task team and National Commissioner Fannie Masemola.

Cele made his first appearance before the parliamentary ad hoc committee investigating allegations of corruption made by KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

Cele didn’t take much to dismiss some of the claims made by his successor, Mchunu, during his testimony, including his reasonsto disband the Political Killings Task Team.

He added that Matlala informed him that Mchunu was behind an attempt to have him arrested for a tender more than 15 years ago.

"Matlala tells me that Mchunu is preparing to arrest me for having got into corruption for the 2010 tender. Here is the evidence."

He told evidence leader Norman Arendse that Mchunu is best placed to respond to why he wanted him arrested.

"He can answer that best."

Cele said Matlala also informed him that he was using the police’s procurement processes to help fund Mchunu’s African National Congress (ANC) political campaign.
