The City of Tshwane said major progress has been made at the Bronkhorstspruit water treatment plant following several weeks of reduced water supply in some areas.

It said a new raw water pump system has been successfully installed, bringing the plant closer to full production capacity.

Earlier in October, the Bronkhorstspruit water treatment plant was operating at reduced capacity due to a mechanical fault affecting one of the raw water pumps.

The fault caused the pump to release raw water, slowing down production across the system.

The city said technicians had to completely dismantle the pump to assess and repair the damage.

Following extensive restoration work, the municipality said the plant is now in the commissioning phase, where all electrical and mechanical systems are being tested to ensure safe and efficient operation.

It said water supply to Bronkhorstspruit and Zithobeni has begun to stabilise, while about 80% of the plant’s output is being redirected to high-lying areas including Ekangala, Rethabiseng, and parts of Thembisile Hani, which were slower to recover.

In a statement, the city added that around 30% of the final installation, including wiring and control connections, is still underway, with full operational capacity expected early next week.
