Egypt’s Al Ahly SC has filed a formal complaint with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following controversial decisions by referee Issa Sy.

The Senegalese referee officiated their CAF Champions League clash against Eagle Noir FC over the weekend.

Despite walking away with a 1-0 victory, controversy erupted in the 16th minute when Sy issued a red card to Al Ahly player Nejc Gradisar.

In an official statement, the team says the complaint was filed against "numerous incorrect decisions by the referee", which included the red card and dismissal for an alleged assault against Ahmed Ramadan Beckham.

Speaking to Robert Marawa on 947, sports editor Ayman Atef said the team also provided video evidence to back up its complaint.

"They are still waiting for the CAF Competition Committee to respond, but they don’t expect any decision."

He added: "The general feeling is anger, worrying about the future of the game under these circumstances of very poor refereeing."

Atef said the complaint should prompt CAF to consider implementing VAR across its tournaments.

"[Al Ahly] know very well that CAF are not going to change the decisions, but they consider it as a message to CAF."
