The Democratic Alliance (DA) asserts that poor residents have a significantly better chance of escaping poverty in a municipality governed by the party than anywhere else in the country.

The party hosted a media briefing where it unveiled a new billboard along the N1 highway in Johannesburg. The billboard reads, “BEE MADE ANC ELITES RICH AND LEFT SA POOR.”

This is part of the party’s strategy to have the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) Act scrapped and replaced with its own Public Procurement Amendment Bill.

DA Federal Council Chairperson Helen Zille said that while B-BBEE prioritises race, the party’s bill focuses on all poor people in the country.

She stated: “And in SA, the vast majority of unemployed and poor are black people. They get the best free basic service package in the DA governments. They get the best opportunities, best public access through transport and various other things. It is far better for a poor person to land up in a DA administration because they can get up on the ladder of getting out of poverty.”
