Two separate incidents involving prisoners escaping from custody during court appearances have been reported in Cape Town within a matter of days.

Last week, police alerted the public about the escape of Pollsmoor inmates from Wynberg Magistrates Court.

The suspects, between the ages of 22 and 33, appeared in court on charges of the illegal possession of firearms, housebreaking, and a warrant of arrest.

Initially, six men had escaped, and it's understood that only one of them is yet to be re-arrested.

Earlier this week, Strand police registered an escape from lawful custody case after three awaiting prisoners escaped from Strand Magistrates Court.

The police's Joseph Swartbooi: "The circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation. A team of detectives and crime prevention members are assembled to follow up all information in a bid to re-arrest them. Investigation and the search continues."
