Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi said that one of his only mistakes may have been his impatience in trying to address the high crime rate in the province.

This is on the back of a recent public protector report, which found the Gauteng crime prevention wardens were established without any legal authority.

Just hours before the Chapter Nine institution released the report, Lesufi announced the disbandment of the initiative to allow the wardens to undergo proper training.

He said when he took office, the crime rate in Gauteng was simply too high to ignore.

"Maybe I’m impatient, and that’s where I feel that I’m guilty. Our people are being mugged left, right and centre. People’s phones are being snatched. Those who work at night, when they get out of the train, the majority of them can’t reach home because they are attacked. Women and children are raped."
