CapeNature is urging the public to keep a safe distance from any Cape fur seals while visiting the city’s beaches.

There are concerns that some seals may be infected with rabies. As a result, the public is warned to watch out for Cape fur seals behaving abnormally.

This warning follows an incident on Thursday when a surfer was attacked by a seal in Bloubergstrand.

Luke Folb, communications officer at CapeNature, had this advice for the public: "As we approach the busy summer season, we remind everyone that Cape fur seals are wild animals and even well-intentioned actions can have serious consequences for both the people and the animals. CapeNature urges the public to act responsibly, avoid contact and immediately report any abnormal or aggressive seal behaviour to the authorities."
