Cape Town’s Metro Police have warned that criminals are modifying fake firearms to discharge live ammunition.
Metro police spokesperson Ruth Solomons said the modifications are being done by criminal amateurs and could result in serious injury.
This comes after two teenagers were arrested after they were found in possession of altered imitation firearms and live ammunition.
Initial reports state that Neighbourhood Safety Officers responded to a school in Macassar on Monday morning after a learner was found with a toy gun.
"They along with SAPS [South African Police Service] found an imitation firearm and 30 live rounds of ammunition and arrested the 17-year-old for the possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition. The female suspect provided further information leading officers to her boyfriend's home where they found another imitation firearm with one live round of ammunition."
