A 64-year-old man accused of breaching G20 security protocols at the Nasrec Expo Centre, south of Johannesburg, is set to make his first court appearance on Wednesday.
The security specialist was arrested on Monday for trespassing at the venue, where South Africa will host G20 heads of state later in November.
It’s understood the operations director of a security firm was attempting to prove that South Africa doesn’t have sufficient measures in place for the upcoming G20 Leaders’ Summit, when he gained entry to the venue under false pretences.
Gauteng Acting Police Commissioner Fred Kekana said while the man has only been charged for trespassing for now, he may face additional charges.
“It’s more severe because it’s at a place that’s classified and security is tight; he shouldn’t have been at that place. Currently, we are still busy with further investigations.”
Kekana said lawlessness will not be tolerated.
“Our safety city plan and our plan to ensure there is no crime incident happening are in place and we are ready. We want to host an incident free event.”
