The trial of an Eldorado Park police officer accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend has been set for January in the Johannesburg High Court.

On Tuesday, Mandla Buthelezi appeared alongside his co-accused, Llewellyn Mayers, who is arrested for intimidating witnesses.

Chesnay Keppler was 22 years old when she was gunned down last December.

Keppler worked as a Gauteng traffic warden when she was apparently romantically involved with Buthelezi, who worked as a South African Police Service (SAPS) official.

Police said Buthelezi attended a party using his State vehicle when he saw Keppler with another man and assaulted her.

Keppler then ran off and Buthelezi followed, firing shots and killing her.

After his arrest, he was granted R20,000 bail, which waslater revoked when he and Mayers intimidated witnesses.

Despite this, Buthelezi said he wants to apply for bail again.

Keppler’s father, Trevor, said he does not deserve it.

“I just think he doesn’t deserve bail because he showed what type of person he is. He will intimidate witnesses again and he will do something bad.”

He will remain in custody until 19 January, while his co-accused is out on R4,000 bail.
