The Democratic Alliance (DA) says that the chaos playing out at the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a crisis that's putting thousands of students at risk.

Higher Education Minister Buti Manamela was scheduled to meet with former NSFAS board chairperson, Dr Karen Stander, who resigned last week.

In her resignation letter, Stander cited serious concerns of bullying, intimidation, racism, and threats to personal safety.

But the NSFAS board, and acting CEO, Waseem Carrim, have rejected her claims.

The minister has admitted that the student funding scheme was facing serious challenges and plans to review the board's composition.

The DA's Delmaine Christians said the party was deeply concerned about the serious allegations made by Stander.

"The Democratic Alliance is demanding that Minister Buti Manamela explain what came out of his meetings with Dr Karen Stander and the NSFAS board and what concrete steps he has taken to stabilise the institution. Students cannot pay the price for mismanagement, legal fights, and political interference. It is time for full transparency and accountability from the minister."
