Firefighters have managed to contain a blaze that began opposite the Maitland Cemetery in Cape Town. 

The fire began on Friday evening and destroyed multiple informal structures. 

While firefighters remain on standby to respond to any flare ups in the area, the city’s Disaster Risk Management Centre is coordinating efforts to assist affected people. 

Aid organisation Gift of the Givers has also come forward to support with immediate humanitarian assistance.

“Several crews are still on scene, but the fire has been contained. At this stage, the white marquee tent and several other structures have been destroyed. No injuries or fatalities have been reported,” explained the rescue services spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse.
