Fire crews in the Cape Winelands District Municipality are making slow but steady progress in containing mountain fire lines above Ashton.
The blaze, which started on Friday, continues to burn in the area above Zolani, but officials say there’s currently no threat to infrastructure.
Firefighting teams have also been mopping up in the Lanquedoc area following another fire, with crews expected to be withdrawn later on Saturday evening.
Municipality spokesperson, Jo-Anne Otto, said the Ashton fire was being managed by multiple agencies, including CapeNature, the Cape Winelands District Municipality, and the local fire protection association.
"The public should note that the heavy smoke in the area is due to the dense vegetation and ongoing firefighting efforts. There is some concern that a change in wind direction could drive the fire toward nearby farmland. Fire trucks are on standby to provide property protection if required."
