Police in KwaZulu-Natal have responded to claims that officers are protecting criminals in the Point area of Durban and urged that such acts be reported.

This after the civil organisation March and March Movement made claims that police officers were protecting criminals in the controversial Point area in Durban's South Beach.

The movement led a march to the Point Police Station on Friday over issues of illegal foreign nationals and crime.

Police said criminal activities were being attended to.

March and March Movement leader Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma has made allegations that police officers were being bribed by alleged criminals in the Point area.

"It is a norm that people just sell drugs in daylight, like it is normal, you know. It is normal here for people to hijack buildings and evict people anyway that they want because they are paying the police," said Ngobese-Zuma.

And when responding to these claims, police in KwaZulu-Natal said they were not aware of any of their members colluding with drug dealers.

However, they have urged people with information to give tip-offs to police officers so that investigations can be instituted.

Police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda said: "Police are encouraging anyone who has information about any police officer involving themselves in any criminal activity to report such corrupt activities. Cases can be opened at any police station, and those cases will be redirected to IPID for independent investigations."

Netshiunda added that the provincial drugs and firearms unit continues to recover illegal drugs and arrest suspects in possession and dealing drugs in Point and other areas of the city.
