NPA deciding whether to oppose bail application of Job Sikhala

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is still deciding whether it will oppose the bail application of a prominent Zimbabwean politician who was arrested in South Africa for allegedly being in possession of explosives.

Former Zimbabwean member of Parliament Job Sikhala appeared in the Pretoria Magistrates Court on Monday, following his arrest last week.

Sikhala said they found 26 blasting cartridges and 15 capped fuse connectors in his vehicle on the Kgosi Mampuru Road in Pretoria.

While he’s set to return to court for a bail application on Wednesday, the NPA’s spokesperson – Lumka Mahanjana – said investigations are ongoing.

“We have not decided whether we are going to oppose their release on bail because we still need to do bail investigations and get their profiles. Only then will we decide whether we should or shouldn’t oppose bail.”

A group of Zimbabwean activists gathered outside the court to show support for the citizens coalition for change leader.

One of his supporters, Baron Mahlangu, said he believes the former MP is being framed.

“Job is not a stupid person who can take explosives and put them in his car. Job is innocent, and we will investigate and find out who is behind this. I’m saying that he was framed.”

Another one of his supporters, Trust Ndlovu, echoed similar sentiments.

“A person of his calibre, a person of his intellectual capacity, and with his conscious to law, wouldn’t put explosives in his car.”
