Pienaar died on Monday (10 November) morning in his sleep in Johannesburg after reportedly suffering heart failure.

Pienaar's ex-wife Rosana Maya confirmed the news in a Facebook post saying, "Most beautiful man, unique soul. Like your wolves, you gave so much for so little. The world is a lesser place without you in it, my sadness too deep. Fly with angels, my love".

Pienaar enjoyed a career spanning more than three decades, establishing himself as a household name through his memorable roles in some of the country’s most iconic productions.

Pienaar appeared in several versatile TV series and films, including Yizo Yizo, Triptiek, The Lab, Isidingo, Generations, Binnelanders, Legacy, Queen Sono, Onder Draai die Duiwel Rond, and others.
