Retired EMPD deputy commissioner, Revo Spies, said that he filed for early retirement in January because the City of Ekurhuleni was on a "clear path of destruction".
Spies, who concluded his testimony before the Madlanga Commission on Tuesday afternoon, levelled serious allegations against acting EMPD head, Julius Mkhwanazi, as well as former Ekurhuleni city manager, Imogen Mashazi.
Spies accuses the pair of colluding in corrupting EMPD by allowing Mkhwanazi to operate with impunity within the metro police.
A 2023 report by IPID found that Mkhwanazi should face disciplinary action after he illegally signed off on two unlawful agreements with alleged criminal mastermind and tenderpreneur, Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala.
Spies explained why he decided to leave EMPD.
"All of this criminality around me is directly against my DNA of being a policeman and I cannot cope with nothing being done in the city and it’s clear that the city is on a path of destruction and I don’t want to be part of this at all anymore."
