Wits University students are staging a protest on campus against gender-based violence (GBV).

The protest comes after the reported rape of a student. The alleged perpetrator is a newly elected student representative council (SRC) member.

Protests broke out on the Wits campus on Monday night after news spread about the incident.

Wits University management said the matter was reported to its Gender Equity Office by a fellow student, and an investigation was immediately initiated.

The university has also confirmed that the accused has been suspended and is barred from accessing any of its facilities pending the investigation.

Meanwhile, the SRC said it will stand in solidarity with all gender-based violence victims.
