Alleged serial rapist Phiri admits promising victim transport fare for sex

The alleged Ekurhuleni serial rapist, who is facing more than 100 sexual assault-related charges, told the court that he promised one of his victims transport fare for a month in exchange for sex.

Sipho Lucas Phiri faces charges including rape, kidnapping, pointing of a firearm, fraud, obstruction of justice, and forcing someone to witness a sexual act.

Phiri admitted to the Pretoria High Court that he deceived another woman in Tembisa for sexual gains in 2018.

He said she had knocked off from work when he picked her up on the side of the road, offering to take her home.

Through an interpreter, he said that he lied to her about being married, saying he had just gotten out of a relationship and wanted a casual one with her.

"I explained to her that I came out of a relationship and that relationship hurt me too much."

He added: "I then explained to her that because I was hurt and didn’t want to get into a relationship and then I was straightforward and direct with her that I wanted sex."

He said after the ordeal, he told her he only had R200 cash. When she got upset that it wouldn't be enough, he told her to get out of the car, leaving her deserted.
