Stellenbosch University has confirmed an incident of gender-based violence on campus.
The alleged assault took place at Russel Botman House on Tuesday evening.
That same night, students held a peaceful protest on campus.
Stellenbosch University said the reported gender-based violence assault was reported to police, but details of the incident have not been revealed.
It has, however, evoked strong reaction from some students, with a protest just days after similar action at Wits University, in Johannesburg.
There, students protested following reports of a rape.
The incidents have come a week before a planned nationwide shutdown, a day before the start of G20 Leaders' Summit, that aims to highlight the ongoing crisis of gender based violence.
The shutdown was initiated by the organisation, Women for Change, which has called on women to stop working and withdraw from the economy for 15 minutes, at noon on Friday, 21 November.
The movement also calls on government to declare femicide a national disaster.
