The Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities (DWYPD) has reaffirmed its commitment to fulfilling its role in the fight against the gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide epidemic in the country.
According to the latest statistics from the Human Sciences Research Council, over 30% of women in South Africa have experienced physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime.
As the country prepares for the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children later in November, the department said greater collective action is needed.
Spokesperson Cassius Selala said the fight against this social ill requires everyone to play a role by protecting victims and challenging harmful norms.
“DWYPD is working with civil society, youth groups, and community organisations to enhance prevention, shift harmful norms, and expand support for survivors. While significant progress has been made, the department acknowledges the remaining challenges, particularly in the areas of funding, capacity, and coordination.”
