Amnesty International South Africa is calling on the police and the Eastern Cape Education Department to speed up the investigation into the death of three-year-old Unecebo Mboteni.

The little boy died after falling into a pit toilet at a pre-school in Mdantsane in April last year.

The non-governmental organisation (NGO) said the department and the day care centre had not taken any responsibility for the incident.

Amnesty International South Africa said it was unfair that those responsible for the boy’s death have not been brought to book more than a year after he fell into a pit toilet at his school.

The NGO's programme and impact manager, Alicia Jooste, said they were working with the little boy's family to fight for justice.

"But also to try and fix the large systemic issue which is ensuring the eradication of pit toilets at all schools, primary and secondary schools, as well as early childhood development centres," Jooste said. "So today we are working with the family in our Global Write for Rights campaign, which mobilises hundreds of thousands of people around the world each year to put pressure on government to take action. In this case, it's justice for little Unecebo."

EWN has reached out to the Eastern Cape Education Department for comment and is awaiting their response.
